Silverfish

What are silverfish?

Silverfish are small, slender insects that occasionally invade New York homes. As their name indicates, they are usually silver in color, and move across the ground in a fish-like manner. They grow to a length of ½ inch to 1 inch. They feed primarily on sugars and starches.

Why are they in my house?

The most important thing to the survival of a silverfish is humidity. They are usually found in areas of high moisture, such as basements, kitchens, and bathrooms. They may also be foraging for food, which is anything that contains starch or polysaccharides. Also, silverfish do not hibernate, so during the cold New York winters they will be looking for somewhere warm to stay.

Are silverfish dangerous?

No. Silverfish do not bite or sting, and are considered a nuisance pest. The only damage they do is to the items they feed on, such as books, photos, paper, glue (a favorite is wallpaper paste), and sugar.

What does it take to get rid of silverfish?

Silverfish are very difficult to find and eradicate due to their small size and nocturnal nature. If you believe you have a problem with silverfish, your best option is to call a professional New York exterminator. Parkway Pest Services provides effective silverfish control to residents and businesses in Nassau, Suffolk, and throughout NYC.

How soon can you get here?

At Parkway, we understand that it is important to you to take care of your pest problem as soon as possible; therefore it is important to us, as well. Emergency and same day service is available, and in most cases we can be there the very next day.

Is the treatment safe?

Here at Parkway Pest Services, we pride ourselves on being Green Shield Certified, and we use Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques, meaning treatments are much safer for you and your family. IPM techniques include far fewer uses of chemicals, using them only as a last resort. Instead, we focus on baiting and the exclusion of pests.

How can I prevent a future infestation?

Silverfish are very difficult to prevent. You cannot eliminate their food sources, because they eat everyday items that you have around the house. Eliminating entry points and lowering humidity levels can help, but it is not usually effective. Many New York City residents choose one of the protection plans offered by Parkway Pest Services. Our protection plans provide constant relief from silverfish and many other common New York pests. Contact us today for more information.

Testimonials

As you know we have been customers of Parkway Exterminating for many years. I thought it was important to let you know how pleased I am with your technician, Albert's service. Albert has been to our home on several occasions but recently for a "problem" that I needed to go away. He was courteous, professional, knowledgeable and completely thorough. I do believe our "problem" is gone and I wanted to thank you because knowing that Parkway takes pride in it's employees makes me want to stay a client for years to come. Thanks so much!!!
