large brown millipede

There are more than 10,000 species of millipedes worldwide and they are very common in New York and throughout the United States. Contrary to what most people think, millipedes are not insects; they are actually very small arthropods. They range in size from 1 to 2 inches in length and are usually brown to black in color. Although their name literally means “thousand legs” they very rarely have more than 400. Unlike centipedes, millipedes have two legs per segment of their body.

Why are they in my house?

Millipedes need very high moisture conditions to live and they prefer living near decaying plant matter. While they do occasionally make their way inside homes and businesses, millipedes most often will die after just a couple of days unless there is a very high humidity level.

Are millipedes dangerous?

Millipedes are generally considered just an occasional invader; they are not venomous and they do not bite or sting. However, if they feel threatened they can emit a very powerful fluid in self-defense. This fluid can cause skin irritation in some people and the odor is horrendous.

What does it take to get rid of millipedes?

Millipedes can be very difficult to eliminate, especially when they migrate in large numbers. The technicians at Parkway Pest Services are licensed and highly trained in the methods necessary to find and eliminate the millipede problem in your home.

How soon can you get here?

At Parkway, we understand that it is important to you to take care of your pest problem as soon as possible; therefore it is important to us, as well. Emergency and same day service is available and in most cases we can be there the very next day.

Is the treatment safe?

Here at Parkway Pest Services, we pride ourselves on being Green Shield Certified and we use Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques, which are much safer for you and your family. IPM techniques include far fewer uses of chemicals, using them only as a last resort. Instead, we focus on baiting and the exclusion of pests.

How can I prevent a future infestation?

Millipedes can be very difficult to keep out of the house. Lowering humidity levels by running a dehumidifier can help. You can also try sealing off any likely looking entry points. However, many people in the Nassau and Suffolk areas choose one of Parkways Protection Plans for constant relief from all sorts of pests.  Call us or fill out our online contact form today.
