There are two dangerous spiders that can be found on occasion in New York: the black widow and brown recluse spider. These spiders oftentimes take rides in or on shipping boxes from other states. A bite from a black widow is venomous and can be fatal to small children or the elderly. Their bite will feel like a pinprick, but after a while, the area will swell and begin to be quite painful. Sometimes these bites cause all over itchiness. Other symptoms are headache, vomiting, sweating, nausea, and weakness. If anyone is bitten by a black widow, they should seek medical attention right away. The brown recluse will only bite if disturbed, inadvertently or intentionally. Their bite will send venom into its victim that can cause necrosis (or death) of the skin cells around the bite. The degree of the reaction can vary from a delayed, slight reaction of a small red mark to an immediate blister that hardens quickly and sometimes develops into a large, open wound that may take a long time to heal. Other symptoms of a brown recluse spider bite may include fever, nausea, sweating, and itching.
