What Are Rodents?
Rodents are small mammals belonging to the order Rodentia. All rodents are characterized by two incisors that never stop growing. To keep them short, the rodent must continuously gnaw. The most common rodents in the New York metropolitan area are mice and rats, but we also commonly deal with squirrels and chipmunks.
Why Are They In My House?
Rodents generally find their way inside in search of food, warmth and shelter, especially during the winter months as they try to avoid the cold New York weather. They enjoy hiding in areas of low traffic and where there are plenty of hiding places. They are often found hiding in walls and in cluttered attics, basements, or crawlspaces.
Are Rodents Dangerous?
Yes. Rodents are known to spread many different disease-causing bacteria and viruses, including Salmonella. Deer mice are common carriers of Hantavirus, the cause of the often fatal Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. Their chewing can also become an issue, as chewed wires can short and become a significant fire hazard.
