What Is A Little Brown Bat?
Coming in shades of tan to black, bats are warm-blooded mammals with fur on their bodies. The little brown bat is the most common bat seen in New York and many neighboring states. The little brown bat has a brownish nose and typically has a wingspan of 8-9” with a body length of 2”. This bat will frequently occupy New York buildings during the summer season, but they may also be spotted in crevices or under loose bark on trees. This species of bats feed mainly on insects, and when their meal has been consumed, they will hang to digest their dinner.

Things You Should Know:
- Little brown bats feed on insects.
- They can carry diseases that are harmful to humans.
- Bats can bring in other pests such as bat mites and bat bugs.
Why Are They In My House?
Little brown bats are most likely in or around your home because they have deemed an area on your property fit for roosting. During the summer, they will use different roosts; one for daytime and one for nighttime. The daytime roost locations can include attics, barns, garages, soffits, chimneys, behind siding, and under shutters. At night they may be found resting in your garage, under an awning, or in your breezeway. These bats have also been known to enter living quarters during stretches of extreme heat to cool down; this is when you are most likely to see them in unusual places. When the young are learning to fly, you may see a lone bat stumble indoors while trying out its wings.
Are Little Brown Bats Dangerous?
Bats can pose serious health threats to our families and pets. These creatures are vectors for many pathogens, including rabies. Bat droppings can also expose your family to fungi that can cause histoplasmosis, a harmful lung disease. These droppings should only be removed by qualified pest professionals. If you come into unprotected, direct contact with a bat, medical attention should be sought immediately.

How Can I Prevent A Future Infestation?
