What are rodents?

Rodents are small mammals belonging to the order Rodentia. All rodents are characterized by two incisors that never stop growing. To keep them short, the rodent must continuously gnaw. The most common rodents in the New York metropolitan area are mice and rats, but we also commonly deal with squirrels and chipmunks.

Why Are They In My House?

Rodents generally find their way inside in search of food, warmth and shelter, especially during the winter months as they try to avoid the cold New York weather. They enjoy hiding in areas of low traffic and where there are plenty of hiding places. They are often found hiding in walls and in cluttered attics, basements, or crawlspaces.

Are Rodents Dangerous?

Yes. Rodents are known to spread many different disease-causing bacteria and viruses, including Salmonella. Deer mice are common carriers of Hantavirus, the cause of the often fatal Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. Their chewing can also become an issue, as chewed wires can short and become a significant fire hazard.

What Does It Take To Get Rid Of Rodents?

Rodents are extremely difficult to get rid of. They breed very rapidly and are extremely elusive. Your best option is to call your local New York rodent exterminator. Parkway Pest Services stands ready to assist you with tracking down and eliminating the mouse, rat, or squirrel problem in your home or business through our effective rodent control solutions and all of our technicians are graduates of the New York City Rodent Control Academy.

Is The Treatment Safe?

At Parkway Pest Services, we take pride in being Green Shield Certified and utilizing environmentally friendly pest control methods such as Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques. IPM techniques rely on baiting and the exclusion of pets with less focus on the use of chemicals, resulting in safer treatment options for you and your family.

How Can I Prevent A Future Infestation?

Prevention should start on the outside of your home by looking for and repairing any gaps that lead into the house. This means checking for cracks and openings along the foundation of the house and filling in gaps around pipes and the edges of doorways. Remember that rodents can fit through small gaps so vigilance is critical. Also, consider trimming any vegetation such as shrubs and bushes that grow around the base of your home. For complete peace of mind, reach out to Parkway Pest Services and sign up for our PestGuard program.
