Silverfish: Not Just An Innocent Little Insect

There are many common sights here in New York in the fall. The leaves turn beautiful colors, the air develops a bit of a nip, apple pies are baked, and stylish scarves and boots begin to appear. There is nothing quite like a fall day in New York. We are all accustomed to these rites of fall and hardly notice when they appear. It’s the same way with silverfish. These common fall pests begin to show up in New York homes as soon as a nip is felt in the air. They are so common in fall, in fact, that we can tend to hardly notice this ‘rite of passage’ either; but that is not a very good habit to fall into.

We can sometimes look at silverfish and feel that they are really a harmless insect that requires no more attention than a broom or the sole of your shoe. Besides being common, most realize that they do not bite or transmit any dangerous diseases; so they tend to get brushed aside. However, silverfish can cause damage within your home and should not be taken so lightly. Besides contaminating food items in your pantry, these creatures have an affinity for starches and sugars which means they will eat things such as glue, book bindings, paper, photos, sugar, coffee, hair, dandruff, and more. I don’t know about you, but the thought of silverfish making a midnight snack out of my hair is just not ok with me.

They will destroy items such as cotton clothing, linen, silk, and synthetic fibers. Clothing, especially articles that are in storage or rarely disturbed, are at risk of damage. Silverfish have even been known to feast on dead insects and their own molted skins.

Another fact about silverfish is that they love moisture. In fact, they cannot survive without it. A not so obvious implication of a silverfish infestation is that your home may have a moisture issue. The appearance of silverfish in your home may mean that you are also dealing with leaky pipes, mold, mildew, and more insects than just silverfish.
