Spotlight Is On NY's Stinging Insects In August

Stinging insect
|

This month we are turning the spotlight to some of our least favorite summer pest invaders...the stinging insects. We’re talking about the bees, hornets and yellow jackets that can leave painful stings and cause quite a scare to you and your family. These pests have likely been nesting around your property since early spring but they become most active in the later summer and early fall months.

Stinging insects are all a concern for homeowners on Long Island, Westchester County and throughout New York. The reason being is that they pack a powerful sting and if you accidentally stumble upon a nest, you may invoke multiple angry members to defend their nest. The sting of these insects can cause allergic reactions in some people, requiring them to seek medical attention. Not exactly what you had in mind for summer fun.

In order to prevent nesting of stinging insects on your property or even inside your home and prevent their painful stings, here are some helpful tips from this experienced exterminating company:

  • Regularly inspect your property for any bee, wasp, hornet or yellow jacket nests.
  • Avoid bringing sugary drinks and food outside which will attract stinging insects.
  • Always wear shoes when outside in case of accidentally stepping on a yellow jacket nest which are generally formed underground.
  • Trim back bushes and trees so they do not provide a safe place for stinging insects to nest on or within.
  • Be sure all open windows are secured with screens that contain no holes or tears for insects to find their way inside.
  • Fill any old burrows or holes in your lawn

Keep in mind that it is nearly impossible to prevent flying insects from getting onto your property all together. If you have identified a stinging insect nest your best bet is to contact us at Parkway Pest Services for the safe and effective removal of the nest. Store bought sprays can be dangerous to use and can instigate these defensive insects which is not what you want especially when your family is nearby. So for Long Island residents as well as those living in Brooklyn, Westchester county and throughout Parkway’s service area, call us today to learn more about how our PestGuard can resolve not only stinging insect problems but other pests as well!
