A termite swarmer  is a white winged termite with the solitary goal of finding and establishing a new colony. Most of the time, you will find them outside of your house trying to get in. When you find swarmers outside, you can know two things: They came from a mature colony, and that colony is somewhere near your home, because swarmers are horrible fliers and a termite swarm doesn't last long. But, let's say you start finding these winged pests on your inside walls attempting to get out. What do you think the chances are that you don't have a mature colony already living in your walls? Let's put it this way: There’s a greater chance of you being struck by lightning, standing in the middle of a field in Stamford Connecticut on a beautiful summer day. Twice. If swarmers are inside your home, you're in trouble.

Is it too Late?

I'm sorry to say, it might be. The best way to keep your home safe from termites is proactive exclusion methods, routine inspections and year round termite protection from a professional. Termite damage can be hard to fix because they chew large galleries through support beams and weaken the structure of your home. This can cause the very frame of your home to bend and warp. This is not an easy thing to fix.

Safeguard Your Investment

  • Keep all mulch at least 15 inches from your foundation. Termites eat mulch as well as use it as a shelter from the hot sun.

  • Keep all firewood at least 20 feet from your home. These stacks of dead wood can be used as a temporary home for termites.

  • Fix any broken weather stripping or loose mortar found around the exterior of your home.

  • Look for small mud tubes around your foundation. These termite-constructed tunnels provide termites with a bridge to your home.

  • Be on the look out for the transparent wings swarmers leave behind. Before you get infested with termites, swarmers will visit you from a nearby location.

  • Repair any leaky air conditioners and pipes. Termites need this moisture to live.

  • Keep ventilation running properly to keep attics and crawlspaces dry. This will slow the progress of termites in your home.

Termites can bring you misery and cost you thousands. To ensure your home's safety, contact a pest control company that specializes in termite control. Have them do a full termite inspection of your home and prescribe a treatment plan that will work for you. Make your home the safest it can be, and learn from your experiences. Lightning never hits the same place twice, but if you've had swarmers visit your home, you'll get them again.
