Digger bees are another type of stinging insect that plagues us here on Long Island and the New York/Connecticut region. Solitary bees, they build mounds in the ground (this is why they are also called ground bees or ground nesting bees) and only one bee occupies each nest.
Generally active from June through September in our area, here at Parkway Pest Services, we’ve been receiving quite a few calls from homeowners noticing these pests and their nests in their lawns and thought it a good time to point out a couple of things in regards to these stinging insects in Long Island.
Digger bees are pretty docile, but they may stink if provoked (in other word’s don’t mow over their nests).
They pose no threat to homes or structures but can make your lawn a bit unsightly with all the mounds.
Digger bees prefer well-drained soil and areas with little vegetation so adding mulch and watering your lawn often may help deter these stinging pests.
