At Parkway, we regularly get phone calls from clients about lots of different pests. One pest that has been creeping up in our phone calls lately is the house centipede. In fact, we’ve gotten enough questions about these arthropods lately to warrant a whole blog post dedicated entirely to centipedes! To answer your questions about these pests, we’ve collected some of our most frequently asked questions about centipedes that we’ve received to date and answered them for you, hopefully to take the mystery away from these many-legged home invaders.

Q: What do centipedes look like?

A: Centipedes can be anywhere between 1/8 of an inch and 6 inches long and they are long and slender with segmented bodies. They can be yellow or dark brown in color, or any color in between. Centipedes don’t have 100 legs, as their name suggests, but they have anywhere between 15 to 200 pairs of legs. Check out these centipede pictures for help identifying these pests.

Q: Are centipedes dangerous?

A: Centipedes are dangerous to your earthworms and insects as these are their preferred sources of food, but they aren’t typically dangerous to you. Larger species of centipedes are capable of delivering a painful bite more than the smaller species, but they are more afraid of you than you are of them, so you may only get bitten by a centipede if you attempt to handle it directly. Some people may experience an allergic reaction to a centipede bite, so if you suspect an allergic reaction, you should receive medical attention immediately.
