Termites
What Are Termites?
Eastern subterranean termites are the most common species of termite found in New York. They are small, white insects, are about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch long, and feed on cellulose from materials such as wood, paper, and soil. Termites are social insects with colonies numbering in the thousands to millions of termites. Their presence can often be detected by the mud tubes that they create to travel in to avoid exposure to direct air.

Things You Should Know:
- Termites are the most damaging structural pest in America.
- A termite's nest can be over 300 feet away from their food source.
- Termite colonies are large and can consist of thousands to millions of termites.
- Subterranean termites eat wood 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- Subterranean termites enjoy wet and water damaged wood.
Why Are They In My House?
If you have termites in your home or place of business it is most likely because they are foraging for food. Termites feed on anything made of wood and especially enjoy water damaged and wet wood.
Are Termites Dangerous?
Termites are not dangerous to humans; however, they are the most damaging structural pest in America. Termites cause an estimated $5 billion worth of damage each year in the United States. If left unchecked in your home, they could cause massive amounts of damage that may not be covered by your insurance company.
What Does It Take To Get Rid Of Termites?
It is extremely difficult to successfully eliminate a termite colony. The main nest may be as far as 300 feet away from where they forage for food. "I contacted Parkway Pest Control as I thought I heard squirrels in my attic/crawlspace. They were very professional; they confirmed that, luckily, I did not have squirrels in the attic, and most likely what I heard was them running on top of the roof. It was a relief. They also gave me some pointers for the future, if I should ever suspect that I do have squirrels in that area — what to do to determine, if they actually are there before contacting them. Their pricing was competitive. I would certainly use them in the future if need be."- Debra C. -
